Man questioned over baby's murder ... Michael Mukasey collapsed and lost consciousness while giving a speech on national security, the US justice department has said.
Mr Mukasey, 67, was taken to a hospital in Washington DC for treatment.
Associate attorney general Kevin O'Connor told the Associated Press news agency: "He just started shaking and he collapsed. They're very concerned."
The former federal judge has been the top US law enforcement official for about a year.
The attorney general was giving an address to the Federalist Society for Law and Public Policy at a hotel in Washington at the time he collapsed.
He was looked after by members of his own security detail until an ambulance arrived to take him to George Washington University Hospital. No details of his condition have been released.
White House spokeswoman Dana Perino was quoted by the AP as saying President George W Bush had been informed of Mr Mukasey's collapse and had him "in his thoughts".
Mr Bush "hopes that he will be back up and at 'em again soon," she said.
Mr Mukasey took over from his predecessor, the scandal-hit Alberto Gonzales, late last year.
